What may be harder to fix is the way the game plays. Whatever visual shortcomings there are in this demo version, though, there's plenty of time between now and the game's release towards the end of the year to fix those problems.

The highlighting on weapons looks good, though, with reflections playing across the spinfusor and plasma gun, and the explosion effects are promising, if not quite up to what I've seen on our PC demo system. Tribes is a hard game to judge graphically, at least between versions in this way, because so much of it is so empty - its engine's muscle is going into drawing such a massive world, not throwing in all the pretty details.

In that regard, the PS2 version is looking pretty good. Now, it seems evident that Tribes is one of the games that's going to need the announced mouse and keyboard peripherals for the online PS2, regardless of how well it runs as far as graphics are concerned. I'd have said this was true even before witnessing it first-hand, but that would have been more my FPS elitism speaking, rather than the voice of experience. Because of the slow projectiles and the long-range character of combat, you have to be able to lead your targets very precisely, especially while you're moving. Tribes, in its own way, demands a level of precision comparable to Quake. Tribes 2 being played with a control pad is, I'm sorry, pretty sad.
